Thankyou Christopher.  That makes sense. I think.  By normals you are 
refering to the normals of the triangles in the mesh.

If I have:

mesh {
	triangle {}
	triangle {}
	triangle {}
	triangle {}
	texture a
}

Is that one evaluation, or up to four?
